I lost my mom to a mental health battle, the same week that we closed on our new house and decided to leave the city we knew as home for the last 8 years. I had a 3-month-old and a 2-year-old at the time, and it was really tough to leave our church and friends and everyone we knew.

I was an engineer in the medical device industry and was successful in my dream job, but I left it all to stay home and take care of my kiddos. I’ve been known to constantly be tearing things down to rebuild and create beautiful spaces. My counselor pointed out how creative I was and how it was evident in everything I had been doing in my grief. I was actually renovating a powder room, and as I was installing the wallpaper myself, I thought, “I could totally make this, but I have no clue how.”

In January, my husband took me to a fun, iconic Western hotel. I found myself obsessing over the different wallpaper and patterns that I saw in the hotel, and the dream nudged me a little more. My husband encouraged the dreams and made me say them out loud, and it felt so crazy because I had no clue where to start.

A few days later, I hopped on Instagram and started seeing all of the promotional videos for immersion, and my husband agreed to get it for me as a birthday present. I really committed to the course because it was a bigger investment for us, and got through it on schedule.

I’ve created more patterns than I could count at this point and just got my first deal to license four custom patterns onto clothing. Six months later, I’ve achieved my goal!

This journey has meant so much to me and helped me find my voice and confidence, which I’ve struggled to find my whole life. It’s been more vulnerable than I’ve ever been, but it's been so rewarding.

My mom was a painter and never gave herself the credit for being so talented. In a way, I’m using my creative voice to speak for hers that was silenced for so many years. As part of my grief, I created a pattern that represented her favorite place. I think that this pattern is actually what led to my first licensing deal. God is moving and working through this, and I’m forever grateful for the kindness Bonnie and the team have shown me. I’ve met so many amazing people through immersion, and I can’t wait to see where else it goes!
